What is Rules Hammer?
Rules Hammer is a fan-made AI assistant that helps you quickly find and understand Warhammer 40,000 rules. Ask a question in plain language and get answers drawn directly from official Games Workshop rule documents, with source citations so you can verify the answer yourself.
How does it work?
When you ask a question, Rules Hammer searches a vector database of rule documents to find the most relevant passages, then uses AI (powered by OpenAI) to generate an answer grounded in those passages. Each answer includes source citations linking back to the specific document and page number so you can check the original text.
What documents does it use?
Rules Hammer indexes the free rules documents that Games Workshop publishes on their downloads page — including core rules, indexes, FAQs, errata, and Munitorum Field Manuals. It does not include content from paid publications like codexes.
Can I filter by faction?
Yes. You can select a faction filter before asking a question. This narrows the search to documents relevant to that faction while still including core rules that apply to everyone.
Is this an official Games Workshop product?
No. Rules Hammer is an independent fan project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Games Workshop in any way. All Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property belongs to Games Workshop.
Can I trust the answers?
Rules Hammer does its best to cite relevant rules accurately, but AI can make mistakes. Every answer includes source citations — always verify important rulings against the official source documents. This tool is meant to help you find rules faster, not to replace the official rules themselves.
Do I need an account?
No. You can use Rules Hammer without creating an account. However, signing up gives you higher usage limits, unlimited conversation storage, the ability to share conversations via link, and follow-up conversations with more exchanges.
What is a Premium account?
Premium accounts unlock additional features beyond what free accounts offer. With Premium you get access to the Rules Hammer Discord bot, which lets you and your server members ask Warhammer 40K rules questions directly from Discord. Premium users can link one Discord server to their account — once linked, anyone in that server can @mention the bot and get answers in a dedicated thread.
How does the Discord bot work?
If you have a Premium account, you can link one Discord server from your account settings. Once linked, any member of your server can @mention the Rules Hammer bot with a Warhammer 40K question. The bot creates a thread on the original message and replies with an answer including source citations. Follow-up questions can be asked in the same thread to continue the conversation. The bot stays active as long as the server owner maintains an active Premium account.
What are the usage limits?
Anonymous users can have up to 2 active conversations with 2 exchanges each, and a lower daily question limit. Signed-in users get up to 10 exchanges per conversation, unlimited conversation storage, and a higher daily question limit. Rate limits also apply to prevent abuse.
Is my data saved?
All conversations are stored server-side. If you have an account, your conversations persist across sessions and devices. Anonymous conversations are tied to your browser session and automatically deleted after 30 days. You can delete any conversation at any time. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
Can I share a conversation?
Yes. Signed-in users can generate a shareable link for any conversation. The link is publicly accessible to anyone who has it and expires after 30 days.
How current are the rules?
Documents are updated as Games Workshop publishes new versions on their downloads page. There may be a short delay between GW publishing an update and Rules Hammer reflecting it.
How can I give feedback?
Each answer has thumbs up and thumbs down buttons. Your feedback helps us understand where the tool is working well and where it needs improvement.
